1. Objectives

Once you have read the documentation and participated in the activities we propose in Lesson 5. How the European Union's action on justice affects, you will able to:

  • Know the jurisdictional body that decides how the Law of the Union should be applied in all its territory.
  • Know to witch the options for accessing European justice by citizens are.
  • Know and understand basic pronouncements of the Court of Justice of the European Union and look for the relapsed in the issues that interest you.

2. Key ideas

The basic content that you will find in this lesson is the following one:

  • The structure of the Court of Justice of the European Union, which is formed by three different courts even if it is a single institution.
  • Main functions of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
  • Access ways of citizens to the CJEU:
    • The question referred for a preliminary ruling before the Court of Justice (indirect mechanisms). 
    • The challenge before the General Court (direct mechanism). 
  • The procedure before de CJEU:
    • Phases of the procedure.
    • Procedural languages.
    • Free procedure.
    • Oustanding pronouncements of the CJEU.

Throughout the contents, you will find different links that will allow you to better understand the general aspects of the CJEU. You will also find a way to search in particular the Judgments outlined in the Lesson and, in general, all the relapses on matters of your interest.
