1. Objectives

Once you have read the documentation and participated in the activities that we propose in Lesson 2. Citizenship of the European Union, you will be able to:

  • Identify the Fundamental Rights you have as a citizen of the European Union.
  • Distinguish the protection mechanisms of the rights derived from the citizenship of the Union.
  • Understand the process through which the European Union promotes the participation of its citizens.

The basic content that you can find in this lesson is the following:

1. The Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

1.1. Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

1.2. Fundamental Rights and the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights.

2. The citizenship of the Union:

2.1. The right to free circulation and residence.

2.2. Rights of active and passive suffrage.

2.3. The right of diplomatic and consular protection.

2.4. The right of petition to the European Parliament.

2.5. Right to file claims with the European Ombudsman.

2.6. Right to address in writing to any of the Institutions.

3. Protection of the derivatives rights of the citizenship of the Union.

3.1. Jurisdictional mechanisms.

3.2. No jurisdictional mechanisms.

4. The Citizen Initiative.
