1. Objectives

Once you have read the documentation and participated in the activities that we propose in Lesson 1: Past, present and future of the European Union, you will be able to:

  • Know what was the origin of the European Union and the particularities that make its nature so special.
  • Understand the evolutionary process as an Organization until reaching its current importance in the global context.
  • To glimpse its probable evolution of the future.

2. Key ideas

At the present Lesson you could find the following content:

1. Basic concepts that will allow you to understand its nature: what is an international organization and why the EU is, in particular, an international integration organization.

2. The historical chronology of the EU, which you will see in two parallel parts:

2.1. The successive enlargements of the EU, up to the total of the 28 countries that now make it up.

2.2. The most relevant historical milestones (political, economic, etc.) that can help you to understand the own existence of the EU and its evolution.

3. The future prospects, in order to confront the possible exit and entry of member countries.

4. The current situation of the EU.

Throughout the contents, you will find different links that will allow you to deepen the topics that are addressed in each section of the Lesson. Do not hesitate to consult them according to your interest, as all of them will allow you to acquire a general vision of the history of the European Union, its origin, the materialization as an International Organization and soon.
